Thanks to everyone for a whole lot of helpful comments.
These 50mm f/3.5 macros sound good, but even as cheap as they are
they're beyond my means at the moment (I'm saving up for a trip to
Zambia). This weekend I'm going to have a look at my 3x teleconverter
to see what can be done with it.

Hmm, well, I suppose so, but it wouldn't be half the fun, would it?
Failing that, it seems that no-one has really said that any option is
particularly worse than others, so I think I'll take a trip to my local
friendly camera shop and see what's cheapest.
