This thread may have reached its end, as I don't think Mike asked for a
discussion of how to setup his own hosting rack, but I've got one parting,
soapbox comment, no more for me.

Your asertations of what's EASY and what's NOT regarding keeping a
self-hosting setup running are very relative. The VAST MAJORITY of people
have _no idea_ how to setup, configure, or maintain an NT, Linux, Win2000,
etc. server. Also, in the U.S., you'd have to have a commercial,
high-speed internet connection to hook it up to. The license agreements
for residential DSL or Cable Internet access specifically forbid you from
putting a web server, SMTP server, etc. on your connection. Yes, I'm sure
people do it, but I wouldn't want to risk my business on such a covert
scheme, personally. Most people dont' have a T1 in their basement.

Most people who are trying to earn a living don't have the knowhow or time
to tinker with their own hosting. To make it safe, reliable, secure, etc.
takes a lot of time, experience, and/or money. That's why I recommend
good, reliable hosting services for all who ask me. It's like building a
new building for your business. Wouldn't you'd hire a contractor, not do
it yourself, in most cases? The ease of use, peace of mind, reliability,
and consistant performance of a good hosting service is a godsend for small
business owners looking to make the web a place to enhance their business.
They don't want to tinker, they just want it to work, just like the water,
electric power, and dial tone.

I've used NTT/Verio (formally Hiway Technologies) for about 4 years and
they've always been there. Their customer service is very good. Their
hosting plans are flexible. I've NEVER had them go down (or I didn't
notice). It just works. I have about 10 friends and business associates
using their services, and I've never seen anything but success.

Sorry for the soapbox,

Skip

Hi Scott

Only months ?

Apart from upgrading software which only requires restarting the
software, this server has been up since 21st April this year when
it was restarted after swapping the SCSI drivers to a new server.
http://www.os2site.com/

Before that, I think it was in about Jan 2001 year that it was down
after the UPS fried itself, prior to that, it was up since Sept 1999.

And I cant remember how long comkal.net has been up,
think I had to turn it off when I upgraded the RAM in
June/July 2001.

Each server hosts from 6 to 12 websites, email, mailing
lists for varies domains etc, ftp servers, chat server,
and comkal.net also runs dialin software for others to login
in from home to access the internet. Each also uses PHP,
Perl, and REXX.

My biggest problem seems to be the routers of other
peoples networks which cause the odd outage. Like here
in Australia, Testra broadband users in NSW couldnt
access there hosted email on my servers for about 3
hours this afternoon .....

With AIX and OS/2, I'm more than happy to lock the
basement and house up, and go to Kalgoorlie for a
few months, knowing not only the servers will remain
running but that they are also secure.

How many security patches have you had to apply ;-)

In all seriousness though, I prefer NT over 2000 or XP
but it does take some trimming and setting up to
run properly, you also want to ensure you have some
really good RAM. When NT is loaded up though, its
rare to see an installation run for more than a couple
of months.

Cheers
Ian B Manners
