What's in a name?

Giclée, while partly meant as a marketing branding tool, as well as to
indicate superior quality printing, really just means high end ink-jet.

RIP means Raster Image Processor. Seems to me that means something that
processes an input image to optimize it for the 'raster' and other
characteristics of a particular printer.

By that definition, the drivers for at least higher end ink-jets are
RIPs. Likewise, I think Qimage is a moderately priced, and very useful,
combination of a layout front end with its own, higher quality, RIPs for
many printers.

How its results on large prints compare to those of more expensive,
dedicated RIPs, I don't know. While I had long considered trying it, a
project for a friend using way too small images from the web led me to
try it and buy it. Its results in printing what were the equivalent of
very large images were simply in another league from the Epson driver,
PS bicubics and Fred M's SI Pro.
