Reminds me of one of my favorite stories - as a trombone player, the music
sometimes calls for a "plunger" mute (think Charlie Brown's teacher). You
don't need anything fancy - just a hardware store plunger works best. The last
time I needed one, I went to the local hardware store and picked up a 6"
plunger, but only took the rubber part to the register. The checkout girl said
"you know there's a handle that goes with that, right?" My response was "Oh, I
don't use the handle." The look on her face was priceless.
