I'm a big fan of the 12-100 as an allround walk around (and holiday) lens.
Very versatile, great image quality. Coming from the 12-40mm, now sold, I
found the extra range useful and beneficial for my photography. When
visiting cities, as is a major part of our holidays here in Europe, I liked
to bring a 17/1.8 wide angle prime with me, to have a compact but still
very capable camera in low light in the late afternoon and evening. I have
a E-M1 II btw nowadays, but used the lens also on the original E-M1.
I found the 12-100mm not less sharp (compared to the 12-40), but for me the
pictures really have some more 'magic' in them. Hard to say what it is,
maybe in the tonality and graduality between sharp and softer, but of
course it can be cognitive dissonance (it is going on quite long then ;-).
When processing my images, I often have to look at the 200% in the
Lightroom compare mode to see which one is sharper, all other things equal.
On many of my other lenses, that is not necessary.
